Nikon unveils 120-300mm f/2.8 zoom with built-in 1.4x teleconverter
Nikon Imaging Korea says the NIKKOR Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR S is the world's first fixed-aperture zoom with a built-in 1.4x teleconverter, and it ships in November.
Nikon Imaging Korea announced the NIKKOR Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR S on 29 October, a Z-mount telephoto zoom for full-frame mirrorless cameras that sits in Nikon's S-Line. The lens keeps a maximum aperture of f/2.8 across its entire 120-300mm zoom range.
According to digitaltoday.co.kr, Nikon describes the lens as the world's first interchangeable zoom lens to combine a fixed f/2.8 aperture with a built-in 1.4x teleconverter, based on its own research as of 29 October. Engaging the teleconverter extends the focal length to a maximum of 420mm, with the maximum aperture dropping to f/4.
The lens weighs about 2735g, roughly 515g less than the AF-S NIKKOR 120-300mm f/2.8E FL ED SR VR that Nikon released in 2020. Autofocus uses what Nikon calls "Silky Swift VCM", pairing a guide mechanism with a voice coil motor.
With a camera body that supports Synchro VR, Nikon quotes up to 6.5 stops of vibration reduction at both the center and the edges of the frame. The barrel is magnesium alloy with extensive sealing against dust and drips.
Nikon Imaging Korea CEO Jeong Hae-hwan said he hopes the lens will serve as a reliable shooting partner for sports photographers. It goes on sale in November; the Korean price was not disclosed.
