Nuvacore on Thursday revealed its Core First CPU IP design strategy, an approach that lets the company design a significant portion of its CPU core IP before committing to an instruction set architecture. The core itself is called WarpCore.
Under Core First, Nuvacore intends to select an instruction set later, based on what works best for the systems it and its partners plan to build. The company describes WarpCore as a new class of general-purpose CPU designed for sustained performance and power efficiency in AI infrastructure and data centers.
Nuvacore has not disclosed its ISA, schedule, configuration, manufacturing process, power, or performance targets. That leaves the central question of which instruction set WarpCore will ultimately run on unanswered for now.
An idea with precedent
The strategy echoes earlier attempts to keep silicon options open across architectures. In 2014, AMD announced the SkyBridge platform for pin-compatible 64-bit Arm and x86 SoCs. SkyBridge was ultimately scrapped, and AMD's Arm K12 core never became a commercial product.
