OpenAI to merge ChatGPT Chat and Work tabs in desktop app

OpenAI told users by email it will test the combined interface with a small group first, while Codex stays a separate space in the app.

OpenAI has told users by email that it will merge the Chat and Work tabs in the ChatGPT desktop app, according to TechCrunch. The company said the new interface will go first to a small group of users for feedback before the rollout is widened.

The desktop app is currently divided into a ChatGPT area and a Codex area, with the ChatGPT area further split into Chat and Work tabs. The merged view is designed to let users move from brainstorming an idea to having ChatGPT execute it in one place.

In the combined interface, users can load files and plugins and have ChatGPT build websites, create presentations and perform web tasks, then review and steer the work as it proceeds. Codex remains a separate space within the desktop app.

OpenAI did not give a date for the wider release. The change follows a similar move by Anthropic, which in September 2026 combined its Claude chat and Cowork features into a single screen.
