OpenAI to unify ChatGPT and Codex usage limits in December
OpenAI also said its legacy Mac app ChatGPT Classic will shut down on January 30, 2027, with chat history carried over to the new app.
OpenAI will merge the usage limits of ChatGPT and its coding agent Codex starting in December, with the Plus, Pro and Business plans drawing on a single token allowance, according to aitimes.com. General chatting with the Instant model will not count against the unified allowance.
The company is also folding Chat and Work into one conversation environment. The change will reach some users first within the coming weeks before a wider rollout. Codex will stay a separate workspace in the ChatGPT desktop app and share only the usage limit.
Users can track remaining usage and reset times in the Usage section of settings, and can buy credits once the limit is exhausted. Existing conversation history will carry over to the new app.
Separately, the legacy Mac desktop app ChatGPT Classic will shut down on January 30, 2027. OpenAI renamed the older app ChatGPT Classic in July 2026, when it released a new desktop app.
On October 28, 2026, OpenAI's Codex lead Tibo Sotio previewed the plan to combine conversation and work features. In September 2026, Anthropic merged Claude's general chat and its Cowork work-automation tool into a single screen.
