OpenAI Releases Images 2.6 With 50% Faster Generation

The new model adds GIF creation, sketch-to-character animation and two API variants, Flare and Sunburst, according to datanet.co.kr.

OpenAI released Images 2.6, a new image generation and editing model, on November 5, according to datanet.co.kr. The company says the model generates images 50% faster than its predecessor.

Images 2.6 can preserve the distinctive features of characters and products while editing only the parts a user wants changed. It also supports creating GIF animations and turning sketches into animated characters.

For developers, the API now offers two variants: GPT-Image-2.6 Flare, focused on fast generation, and GPT-Image-2.6 Sunburst, focused on higher quality and precision. With Flare set to Low quality, OpenAI says images can be generated in as little as 6 seconds.

New controls for editing and output

An Image Markup feature lets users mark areas to edit directly on the original image, and the image generation API supports SVG format output. A new Complexity setting controls how much planning the model does before fulfilling a request, separate from the Quality setting.

GIF creation is also available through the API, where developers can set the frame count and the duration of each frame. Images 2.6 is available in ChatGPT and Codex on all pricing plans.
