Samsung alone keeps 8K TVs as LG, Sony and TCL pull back

Samsung released the 8K QN990H in 2026, while LG Display has paused 8K panel development and Sony and TCL have left the market.

Samsung Electronics is effectively the only major TV manufacturer that kept 8K models in its new lineup for 2026, according to digitaltoday.co.kr. The company released its 8K TV QN990H this year.

LG Electronics has stopped launching new 8K TV products, and LG Display has put 8K panel development on hold. Sony and TCL have withdrawn from the 8K TV market.

The retreat follows a long stretch of weak demand for the format. In 2024, market research firm Omdia reported that about 1 billion 4K-class ultra-high-definition TVs were in use worldwide, while cumulative 8K TV sales since 2015 stood at only about 1.6 million units. Omdia also said 8K TV sales peaked in 2022.

Doubts about the format's visible benefits have circulated as well. Researchers at the University of Cambridge found that at a viewing distance of 2.5 m on a 44-inch TV, 4K and 8K offer no significant visual advantage over QHD.

Content remains limited but not absent: Japan's NHK operates 8K broadcasting, including the BS8K channel.
