SK Telecom Deploys AI Network Tools for Busan Fireworks Festival

SK Telecom will add temporary base stations and deploy about 100 staff as the 21st Busan Fireworks Festival expects more than 1.2 million visitors.

SK Telecom said on November 5 that it has put in place enhanced AI-based network management and on-site response measures for the 21st Busan Fireworks Festival, which is being held around Gwangalli Beach, according to digitaltoday.co.kr.

The company's in-house wireless AI operations system, A-One, calculates the network capacity needed from expected crowd numbers and past traffic data. Its core-network AI integrated control system, Spider, monitors for anomalies in real time and will apply AI-based load balancing on the day of the event.

Starting this year, SK Telecom has added a perceived-quality satisfaction rate to its AI network operations system. The metric measures the share of time service quality stays above a set standard by analysing data loss and transmission delay. Services are divided into four types — web, social media, business collaboration and high-definition streaming — and quality is analysed for each. Quality-degradation locations are pinpointed with grid-level GPS coordinates, and the data is used to distinguish movement on the KTX and subway from residence.

Temporary facilities and on-site staffing

Temporary facilities including mobile base stations will be added at Gwangalli Beach and Marine City, with Yongho Bay and Igidae also placed under intensive management. About 100 people from SK Telecom, SK O&S and partner companies will be deployed to check quality in real time and manage safety on site.

The festival is expected to draw more than 1.2 million visitors. In 2024 it drew 1.03 million visitors, and 1.17 million last year.
