Battlefield 6 Sells 7 Million in Three Days, Coutaz Reflects on 2042 Turnaround

DICE GM Rebecka Coutaz discusses Battlefield 2042's rocky launch and how the studio rebuilt the franchise ahead of Battlefield 6's record-breaking debut.

DICE general manager Rebecka Coutaz has spoken about the challenges of rebuilding the Battlefield franchise following the troubled launch of Battlefield 2042, as its successor Battlefield 6 sold over seven million units in just three days.

Coutaz joined DICE as VP and GM in November 2021, two weeks after Battlefield 2042 launched to negative reviews and technical issues. EA CEO Andrew Wilson later described the game's sales as disappointing.

The studio spent months stabilising the game, releasing patches every two weeks and launching season one in May 2022, six months after release. Byron Beede was appointed general manager of the Battlefield franchise before 2042 launched, and Vince Zampella joined the franchise at the end of 2021.

Battlefield 6 was developed across four studios: DICE, Criterion, Motive Studios, and Ripple Effect, formerly DICE LA. Ripple Effect had previously built Battlefield 2042's Portal mode, while Criterion had worked on Battlefield 5 and Battlefield 2042.

The scale of the launch suggests the franchise has recovered commercially. Gamesindustry.biz reported on the sales milestone and Coutaz's comments.
