Dan Houser: Red Dead Redemption and Bully nearly didn't happen

The Rockstar Games co-founder said both games went through many moments where they almost never got made, in an interview with IGN.

Rockstar Games co-founder and former lead writer Dan Houser said Red Dead Redemption and Bully both went through many moments where they nearly did not happen, in an interview with IGN.

Houser said the 2010 open-world western faced a lot of difficult periods that were overcome by strong core team members who stayed focused and solved problems. He described the work as slowly unpicking what was interesting about an open-world cowboy game.

He added that Bully had many moments where it nearly did not happen as well.

According to Houser, new, original franchises struggle harder than sequels, which makes it more impressive when they get made.

Context

Red Dead Redemption was released in 2010, and Bully never got a sequel. Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the best-selling games of all time, while Rockstar is currently focused on GTA 6.
