Bethesda confirms Fallout 5 will run on Creation Engine 3

Todd Howard told Windows Central the engine prioritises development tools and systems, and The Elder Scrolls 6 will use it first.

Bethesda has confirmed that Fallout 5 will be built on Creation Engine 3, the latest version of its proprietary game engine. The studio also confirmed that The Elder Scrolls 6 will use the same engine ahead of Fallout 5.

Speaking with Windows Central, Bethesda's Todd Howard said the new technology emphasises the tools and systems used to build the studio's open-world RPGs, not just improved graphics.

Howard's comments place the engine's development focus on the internal tooling behind quests, world-building and other systems rather than on visual upgrades alone.

The Elder Scrolls 6 comes first

Bethesda has said The Elder Scrolls 6 is its current focus, and that the title will use Creation Engine 3 before Fallout 5 does. No release window for either game was given.

Fallout 4, the last single-player mainline entry in the series, was released in 2015.
