FF14's new job name draws on Norse mythology, Yoshida says

In a joint interview, the FF14 producer and director said players can find hints about the new job's name in Norse mythology-related words and nuances.

Naoki Yoshida, producer and director of Final Fantasy XIV, said the terms appearing in the game's next expansion are heavily inspired by Norse mythology, according to an interview reported by news.denfaminicogamer.jp. The remarks were made in a joint interview published on November 1, 2026.

Yoshida said players may get a hint about the name of the new job by looking into Norse mythology-related words and nuances. He also described the job as a pet job with mechanics completely different from bard and machinist, calling it the first such pet job in a while.

On the pet, Yoshida said version 8.0 uses a hawk-type bird of prey as the basis, and declined to say what will happen later. He said he would not rule out changing the pet's color or appearance.

Yoshida added that the skill in which the job's character is carried around by a familiar allows voluntary movement while grabbed and has real benefits, not just visual ones. He linked this to the reborn mode, which gives various jobs quirky actions, citing the dragoon's Skyhigh action.

PvP, battle content and roulette changes

The interview also covered the PvP beginner hall, which teaches basics such as guarding, using an action to recover HP and drinking elixirs to restore MP, starting with being stunned by an NPC and removing it. Yoshida said job-specific guides will first be prepared for PvE, with PvP job guides to follow later.

He said the new battle content Gauntlet of Power was created so players can use their disposable time effectively, with short battles that can be quit partway through. Bosses from past instanced dungeons appear in succession and are all randomized, with bosses from future patches to be added, and content programmers reworked old dungeons originally built as one-offs so they work well in the new mode.

Yoshida said the existing content roulette will remain but its categories will be significantly reduced, shifting from daily to weekly with activity points earned by clearing missions. He also said the alliance raid savage will have savage-only mechanics and visual effects and some unexpected forms, and that crafted gear will continue to exist and fill the gap between the new season gear and raid gear.
