Final Fantasy 14: Evercold Q&A Details Black Mage Changes, Poetics Removal

At Fanfest Tokyo, Naoki Yoshida confirmed Black Mage Evolved Mode changes, bait-free fishing and the end of Poetics tomestones for the 8.0 expansion.

At Fanfest Tokyo on November 1, 2026, Final Fantasy 14 game director Naoki Yoshida answered audience questions about the Evercold expansion, covering job changes, housing and item systems, according to pcgamesn.com.

For Black Mage's Evolved Mode, Yoshida said Triplecast will be removed and replaced with an ability that is not three instant casts. Leylines will no longer require players to stand on them for 30 seconds and will allow the use of X abilities on them.

Yoshida confirmed that a Zephyr player's bird companion can be dual-dyed by giving dyes to a certain NPC. A post-Evercold housing update will let every housing item be floated, possibly with a few lighting exceptions, and options to change AFK poses while a weapon is out are being worked on.

Poetics tomestones will disappear in 8.0, replaced by something players can trade for gear for alt jobs or past rewards. Fishers will no longer need to carry bait; bait will be selectable from a list unlocked by leveling and quest rewards. The switch to personal loot will still let players who have cleared that week help others, while players who have not cleared will get loot.

The Evercold benchmark is scheduled for early December, with a livestream showing new features beforehand. The February launch date for the 8.0 expansion was announced at the Fanfest Tokyo keynote the day before the Q&A.
