Gamepires announces layoffs, says SCUM development continues

Gamepires will shrink its studio and cut members of the SCUM team, calling the move a business decision and not a verdict on the team's work.

Gamepires announced layoffs on October 14 that will reduce the size of the studio, saying the cuts will affect studio members and the SCUM development team. The Croatian developer gave no specific number of affected staff.

In the announcement, made on the official SCUM X account, Gamepires described the layoffs as a business decision and said they are not a reflection on the team's work. Development of SCUM will continue, with further updates and content planned, according to the studio. The news was reported by gamespark.jp.

Gamepires was founded in 2010 and released Gas Guzzlers Extreme in 2013, a title that was well received. SCUM launched in Steam Early Access on August 30, 2018, and received its full release update on June 17, 2025, about seven years later.

In 2022, Gamepires was acquired by Jagex, the studio known for the RuneScape series. In February 2026, it was reported that Splash Damage, which worked on the Gears series and Halo: The Master Chief Collection, had acquired the studio. As of the article's writing at 22:45 on October 14, 2026, Splash Damage had made no announcement.
