The Coalition Taps Xbox Series S SSD as Extended Memory for Gears of War: E-Day

Studio technical director Kate Raynor says the team streamed rarely used data straight from the Series S SSD and cut Lumen reflections to hit performance targets.

The Coalition has outlined how it got Gears of War: E-Day running on the Xbox Series S, with studio technical director Kate Raynor saying the team treated the console's SSD as extended memory. The studio offloaded data that was not needed within a frame, or across a run of frames, to the SSD, while keeping constantly required data resident in RAM.

The Coalition also dropped Lumen reflections as part of the work on the Series S build. Raynor described the approach in comments reported by ign.com.

The technical breakdown covers Gears of War: E-Day, the next mainline entry in the series. The Coalition developed the title.

Gears of War: E-Day launched last week into early access.
