Side-scrolling action game Kick released, starring football-loving schoolboy

Kick, developed by Peter Soerensen under the name nospacelost, follows a football-loving boy kicking a ball along his route to school across 23 stages.

The side-scrolling action game Kick has been released, according to 4gamer.net. The game stars a football-loving boy called The Kid who kicks a ball along the route to school.

Kick is set in Japanese-style locations, including residential districts, shopping streets, a sandy beach, an elevated railway underpass and a park. It has 23 stages with challenges such as running to catch a train and finding shortcuts, and players can disable the timer to explore at their own pace. The game supports Japanese.

Kick was developed by Peter Soerensen, who works under the name nospacelost. In 2023, Soerensen began learning Unreal Engine despite having no game development experience, and completed Kick through self-study.

From Roach Race to Captain Tsubasa

Kick was originally inspired by the mini-game Roach Race in Cyberpunk 2077, and started as a game about a boy who misses the bus and runs to school. The current dribbling system came about when a ball placed as an obstacle happened to roll like a dribble.

Soerensen was also influenced by the Japanese anime Captain Tsubasa, which he was absorbed in as a child. The mix of hand-drawn 2D characters and 3D backgrounds arose because the developer had no knowledge of 3D animation.
