Mortuary Assistant dev releases free Halloween game Playable Archive

Playable Archive, a 30-minute found-footage horror game from Brian Clarke's DarkStone Digital, includes a slice of the cancelled Paranormal Activity: Threshold.

DarkStone Digital, the studio of The Mortuary Assistant developer Brian Clarke, released Playable Archive this week as a free Halloween game, according to Eurogamer. The project is a found-footage horror experience that runs for roughly 30 minutes.

Playable Archive contains a small slice of the cancelled Paranormal Activity game that Clarke had been working on. That project was announced as Paranormal Activity: Threshold in November 2025.

Clarke launched The Mortuary Assistant in 2022, and DreadXP later approached him about making a game set in the Paranormal Activity universe. He spent around two years developing it before it debuted at PAX East earlier in 2026, where the demo feedback was extremely positive.

Paramount, which received Clarke's pitch for the game, refused his request for a small extension to finish QA, localisation and porting, and the project was cancelled. Playable Archive is out now for free.
