Poland touts games as soft power at Poznań GIC press program
The Polish Indie Games Foundation outlined how ministries, cultural institutes and studios jointly promote Polish games abroad.
Poland's Ministry of Foreign Affairs co-hosted a press program with the organizers of the Game Industry Conference (GIC) in Poznań, where the Polish Indie Games Foundation (PIGF) presented how government bodies and studios jointly promote Polish games abroad, according to gamespark.jp.
At the start of the program, Damian, who works with PIGF and handles East Asian PR for 11 bit studios, described games as Poland's soft power. The presentation named Chopin, Marie Curie and CD PROJEKT RED as the three things people worldwide associate with Poland.
PIGF coordinates the promotion of Polish games, while funding comes from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, the Creative Industries Institute, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Polish cultural institutes and embassies abroad. Organizers cited 3 billion złoty in Cyberpunk 2077 revenue, compared with over 1.8 billion złoty in 2023 exports for the Polish apple industry.
Warsaw's game industry workforce was given as 6,343 people, more than London's, with about 300 studios in the city versus 200 in all of Romania. Poland ranked third in national game industry size behind the UK and France, with about 14,000 people working in games, and 97% of revenue for Polish studios comes from abroad, led by the US and China.
The presentation listed Cyberpunk 2077, The Witcher series, House Flipper, House Flipper 2, Layers of Fear, 911 Operator, Ancestors Legacy and Frostpunk in the "1 million copies sold club," with The Blood of Dawnwalker from Rebel Wolves as the newest member and MOUSE: P.I. For Hire also passing one million copies.
Polish developers have attended events including PAX West/East, GDC, Gamescom, Paris Games Week and Tokyo Game Show, and Poland aims to exhibit at South Korea's G-Star next year.
