Giacchino says he and Warner Bros. are re-engaging with Them! remake
Director and composer Michael Giacchino says he and Warner Bros. are returning to the Them! remake after mergers and scheduling conflicts delayed it.
Michael Giacchino says he and Warner Bros. are re-engaging with the planned remake of Them!, after delays he linked to mergers and scheduling conflicts. The director and composer described the project's status in an interview with ScreenRant.
Giacchino said that with "the dust settling," he and the studio are getting back into the project. No writer has been confirmed for the remake, and no release date has been announced.
He has said his version will work as an allegory for immigration rather than adopting the anti-nuclear theme of the original. The 1954 film, directed by Gordon Douglas, centred on nuclear-mutated ants in New Mexico.
A Them! remake was reported to be in the works at Warner Bros. with Giacchino attached to direct nearly 40 years after the original's release. In early 2025, Matt Reeves joined the project as a producer. Reports that Giacchino was meeting with writers came before the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike.
Warner Bros. spent the past seven months with a Paramount Skydance acquisition held up by a federal antitrust suit and Hollywood protests, completing it at the top of this month. Reeves recently stepped away from production on The Batman — Part II due to a family matter.
