Street Fighter's Chun-Li Scene Was Originally More Gruesome

Callina Liang says Capcom opted for a Shadaloo brand instead of a pinky-cutting moment in the new Street Fighter film.

Callina Liang, who plays Chun-Li in the new Street Fighter film, revealed that a key scene involving her character was originally written to be far more gruesome. According to comingsoon.net, the original version had Chun-Li cutting off her pinky rather than receiving M. Bison's Shadaloo symbol brand on her hand.

Liang said Capcom went back and forth with the script before ultimately deciding that the hand-branding was the better option. She also noted that she camera-tested the original version of the scene.

Street Fighter is now playing in theaters. The film opened at $30 million and saw its domestic box office fall by 72% in its second weekend while remaining in 3,575 theaters. It has grossed approximately $79.6 million worldwide against a budget of $82 million, and holds a 41% Tomatometer score.
