The Takashi Yamazaki film also took 1.38 billion yen in its first three days in Japan, with a 910 million yen Godzilla Day opening.

Godzilla Minus Zero earned roughly $6 million in previews in the U.S., a record for distributor GKIDs, according to comingsoon.net. The preview total includes Godzilla Day fan shows on Tuesday and Wednesday, along with a Wednesday haul of more than $4 million.

Analysts had projected $30 million-plus for the film in North America, with IMAX and premium large-format screens contributing to the tally.

In Japan, the film reached 1.38 billion yen ($8.7 million) through three days. Its Godzilla Day opening haul of 910 million yen ($5.7 million) set a record for a live-action film in Japan, surpassing Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets at 840 million yen.

Takashi Yamazaki wrote, directed and served as visual effects supervisor on Godzilla Minus Zero, which pits postwar Japan against King Ghidorah. Critics have given the film a 90% certified fresh score.
