James Gunn Details DCU's 8- to 10-Year Plan: Diamonds and Standalones

Gunn said on Threads that the roadmap covers Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman alongside smaller characters and both standalone and serialized stories.

DC Studios co-head James Gunn posted on Threads to clarify the studio's "8 to 10 year roadmap," saying it covers not only story points but the plan for DC as a whole, according to Variety.

Gunn described Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman as "diamond characters," and named Krypto, John Stewart and Peacemaker as smaller characters who could "turn into diamonds."

He said the plan includes filmmaker freedom, multiple tones and ratings, and influences of Star Wars and George R.R. Martin. Some stories are standalone, as with the Guardians films and Clayface, while others sit inside a larger narrative structure, the Superman Saga.

Gunn said his next film, Superman: Man of Tomorrow, arrives in theaters on July 9, 2027.

Earlier groundwork

In 2022, Gunn and fellow DC Studios co-head Peter Safran said during a Warner Bros. Discovery virtual town hall that they had mapped out an 8- to 10-year plan for DC. In January 2023, Gunn said DC would make standalone stories like the Guardians films alongside stories tied to a larger narrative like the Superman Saga.
