Lukas Frank Rewrote 'Behemoth!' Song After Gilroy's First Try
Frank said the initial version of "Your God Is Sleeping" sounded like a 1970s protest song, so he delivered a new take two days later.
Tony Gilroy and Lukas Frank discussed how Frank rewrote the song “Your God Is Sleeping” for the film Behemoth! during the Middleburg Film Festival, following a Sunday morning screening of the film, according to IndieWire.
Frank said the original version, developed by Gilroy and composer James Newton Howard, felt like a 1970s protest song and not something a 16-year-old girl could write. Gilroy said Frank kept the title and delivered a new version of the song a couple of days later.
In the film, the song is performed by Viviana, a young musician connected to Pedro Pascal's cellist character Alan Serian, at a Los Angeles music club.
Frank also said he sent Gilroy several attempts at a piano requiem for Viviana, which Gilroy rejected; Gilroy suggested the title “My Mother” for one of them.
Gilroy's relationship with Frank goes back about 10 years, through Frank's father Scott, a friend of Gilroy. Gilroy became a fan of Frank's band Storefront Church, and Frank was not originally planned to be part of the film's music. Newton Howard, a nine-time Oscar nominee, wrote the Viviana cues after he and Gilroy settled on the character's musical identity.
