New York Times Company in exclusive talks to buy Letterboxd for $330 million

The deal would give the Times a controlling stake in the film-fan platform, bought from Tiny, with finalists A24 and Sony Pictures out.

The New York Times Company has entered exclusive negotiations to acquire Letterboxd at a valuation of $330 million, according to IndieWire. The deal has not been finalized.

The Times would acquire its controlling stake in the film-fan platform from Tiny, the Canadian public company that has held a majority position. A24 and Sony Pictures Entertainment were finalists in the sale talks before the Times moved into exclusivity.

The $330 million figure is more than 20 times Letterboxd's projected 2026 earnings of about $15 million. The Times has discussed keeping Letterboxd founders Matthew Buchanan and Karl von Randow in place, reporting to a Times executive.

From $50 million to $330 million

Tiny originally picked up a 60 percent stake in Letterboxd in 2023, when the website was valued at just $50 million, and has been exploring a sale since April 2026. Letterboxd now reaches 26 million users, up significantly since the Tiny acquisition.

The New York Times Company currently has 13.8 million paid subscribers and aims to reach 15 million by the end of 2027.
