Sony Pictures Entertainment announced that Ramayana: Rise of a Legend is projected to earn a 3-day domestic gross of $7.3 million by the end of its traditional opening weekend. The studio put the film's cumulative 4-day Thursday-to-Sunday domestic gross at $10.8 million, according to screenrant.com.
The film opened on 1,433 screens, the widest North American release ever given to an Indian movie. The projected debut would place it at No. 5 on the chart of highest-grossing domestic debuts for Indian movies, above Pathaan's $6.9 million.
The opening also ranks as the highest-grossing domestic debut for star Ranbir Kapoor, who plays Rama. Yash plays Ravana in what is his Bollywood debut. Nitesh Tiwari directed and co-wrote the film, which adapts the Hindu epic poem attributed to Valmiki.
