Uchiyama Takuya is adapting Machiya Ryohei's 2016 novel "The Blue Breaks" into a feature film, a Japan-Italy co-production that was presented at the Tokyo Gap-Financing Market, according to Variety.
The story follows Shukichi, a part-time worker in his thirties who was conceived through sperm donation and travels to Korea with the people around him.
The film is produced by Satoh Naomi of Japan's Differentia and Parsifal Reparato of Italy's Antropica. The team is currently working on the screenplay, casting and financing, with shooting planned for 2027 and completion in 2028.
The project is targeting a premiere at an international festival. Satoh pointed to Uchiyama's earlier film "Numb," which was selected for the Berlinale, as evidence that his work could resonate beyond Japan.
