DIY BSB-SLAM add-on gives Bigscreen Beyond base-station-free tracking

The add-on pairs an off-the-shelf Xvisio XR50 SLAM sensor with a 3D-printed mount and software, and users can now order the parts and build it.

A DIY add-on called BSB-SLAM that adds SLAM tracking to the Bigscreen Beyond VR headset is now available for users to build and use, according to Hackaday. The project attaches a sensor to the front of the headset and includes software that combines the sensor data with the headset.

The add-on provides full 3D tracking of the headset without external base stations. It does not make the headset wireless: the Bigscreen Beyond still requires a wired connection to a PC.

The build uses a small off-the-shelf Xvisio XR50 board, a USB cable and a 3D-printed mount. The Xvisio XR50 is described as a relatively expensive but small and lightweight SLAM sensor that is available online.

The project is now at the point where users can order the part, print the adapter and run it with the software package.

Earlier work

The creator, Prohurtz, first got the SLAM add-on idea working in 2025, according to Hackaday. Prohurtz previously created the EyeTrackVR DIY eye tracking add-on.
