Capcom unveils REX, an AI-focused RE Engine overhaul
Capcom's REX project aims to make the RE Engine an AI-generation game engine, with AI streamlining development workflows.
Capcom announced a major improvement project for its RE Engine called REX, aimed at using AI to streamline game development workflows. The company detailed the plans during a presentation, according to Engadget.
Capcom programmer Satoshi Ishida said AI would mostly help streamline development workflows. He noted that games and their assets have become larger, leading to longer development times.
Capcom said it aims for the RE Engine to eventually become a game engine of the AI generation.
AI plans build on earlier statements
Capcom previously said during a shareholders' meeting Q&A that it would explore using AI to assist with graphics, sound and programming but would not use AI-generated content in its games.
The REX project follows other industry moves, including Epic Games' announcement earlier this year that it would incorporate Claude and Gemini into Unreal Engine. Capcom also saw success with the release of Onimusha: Way of the Sword.
