DoorDash: Only a few hundred Q3 orders came via external AI agents

CEO Tony Xu said agent-based ordering is still volatile, adding that DoorDash will not fight the trend but should not fool itself.

DoorDash said orders placed through external AI agents totaled only a few hundred in the third quarter, according to digitaltoday.co.kr. Most users still order through the DoorDash app.

CEO Tony Xu described agent-based ordering as a volatile area. He said the company will not fight the technology trend but should not fool itself about its current scale.

DoorDash plans to study agent use cases further and build sound relationships with external agent developers. Xu added that advertising inside these agents could be an opportunity in the future.

The company has been expanding its own ordering tools. In June it launched Ask DoorDash, a chatbot that takes orders through prompts and photos, and in July it released a command-line interface (CLI) agent. In September it introduced an agent for ordering by text message, and it has also released a Model Context Protocol (MCP) so business customers can order from other chatbots.

Delivery base

In a 2025 report, DoorDash said it handles an average of 3 million deliveries per day.
