Electric Plant Company launches Bombadil plant-signal model

Bombadil was pretrained on more than 4 million hours of electrical recordings from about 1,400 plants across 100 species, according to aitimes.com.

Electric Plant Company unveiled Bombadil, a foundation model for plant electrophysiology, the company said on October 20, 2026. The US firm also disclosed an $11.2 million seed investment round.

Bombadil was pretrained on more than 4 million hours of recordings from about 1,400 plants belonging to 100 species, taken from 10 sites including laboratories, greenhouses, commercial orchards and natural forests, according to aitimes.com.

The model uses self-supervised learning: it masks parts of the electrical signals and reconstructs them from the remaining data. It currently estimates seven physiological indicators, among them photosynthetic efficiency, leaf temperature and crop water stress index.

Readings come from Bud, a low-cost sensor attached to plants that records electrical activity continuously. Analysis results are delivered to users through a dashboard and alerts.

Company background

Justin Mast and Lee von Kraus co-founded Electric Plant Company in 2023. Earlier research applied machine learning to plant electrical signals, but models were typically built for a single species, a specific environment and an individual task.
