Google expands AI Mode ads to 10 more countries

The expansion follows OpenAI's ChatGPT ad rollout and comes as Anthropic keeps Claude free of advertising.

Google expanded advertising in AI Mode, its search chatbot, to 10 more countries beyond the US last week, according to wired.com.

The move widens Google's ad footprint in conversational search as rival AI assistants take different paths on advertising. OpenAI has attracted more than 100,000 advertising customers in ChatGPT since ads debuted there in February 2026.

Anthropic, meanwhile, has kept Claude free of ads, a pledge it made in its Super Bowl commercial this year. Its recent IPO filing does not mention selling ads.

Smaller players are moving into the same space. Koah Labs markets itself as bringing ads to over 200 apps, including DeepAI and Liner, and works with brands including Hims and UrbanStems. Koah has attracted about a tenth of the advertisers OpenAI has.

Koah CEO Nic Baird said ads partly composed by AI generate double the clicks of fully human-written ads. He said Koah users click about 3 percent of ads, roughly on par with Google's ad system, and that chatbot prompts tend to be at least twice the length of Google queries. Baird said Koah anonymizes and de-identifies the queries it receives but declined to comment further on data collection and storage.
