Google Outlines Wear OS System Status Bar in New Canary Emulator
The bar shows time and system indicators with consistent typography across apps, and apps can hide it for fullscreen use.
Google has detailed an upcoming Wear OS system status bar that appears over app windows at the top of the circular display, according to 9to5google.com. The feature is available for testing through a new canary emulator for Android Studio.
The bar displays the current time and system status indicators with standardized typography, placement and backplate across apps. Apps can hide it when they need a fullscreen experience. In this preview build, the bar shows a placeholder star icon in place of the final system status indicators.
Apps targeting API level 35 or higher and compiled against Compose for Wear OS 1.8.0-alpha02 or higher opt in automatically through AppScaffold and ScreenScaffold. AppScaffold suppresses its in-app TimeText clock so only the system status bar time appears. ScreenScaffold hides the bar while users scroll through list content and restores the time text after about 2 seconds of idle time.
Fullscreen components and emulator details
Full-screen Material 3 components, including AlertDialog, Dialog, Stepper, TimePicker and DatePicker, automatically hide the system status bar. The StatusBarSuppression API is available for immersive screens.
The canary emulator is published as Wear OS 7.1 with API level 37.2-beta1 on Android 17, codenamed CinnamonBun, and build ID CP41.260831.001.E8. The system status bar appears only in the canary emulator and will not be included in the upcoming Wear OS 7.1 stable emulator. Canary builds let developers test upcoming platform features and UI changes before they reach consumer releases on physical devices.
