Homelab user retires Exchange server after 27 years

The enthusiast, posting as Meta4X, was running Exchange only as a local network alert relay before swapping in Postfix on Ubuntu Server LTS.

A homelab enthusiast posting as Meta4X on Reddit's r/homelab said on November 5 that they are retiring their self-hosted Microsoft Exchange server, which they had maintained since 1999, and moving its last remaining role to Postfix.

The mailboxes and email delivery had already been moved to Microsoft 365 earlier, leaving Exchange running only as a relay for local network alerts. That final relay is being replaced with Postfix on Ubuntu Server LTS.

The setup was upgraded repeatedly over the years, passing through Exchange 5.5, 2000, 2003, 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016 and Exchange 2019. The post was reported by Tom's Hardware.

The planned Postfix configuration includes STARTTLS, Let's Encrypt certificates and boot encryption, though the post does not show the new setup fully deployed. Commenters suggested Mailcow and Grommunio as alternative on-premises mail options.

From a cardboard box to Ubuntu

In 1999 the enthusiast started with Exchange 5.5 on Windows NT 4, and in 2003 shared a photo from the Exchange 2000 to Exchange 2003 upgrade showing a motherboard strapped to a cardboard box with zip ties. Exchange 2019 reached end of support the previous year, one reason to consider the server's future. Microsoft has since moved its on-premises Exchange platform to Exchange Server Subscription Edition (SE) with ongoing licensing requirements.
