Meta and Fourier built humanoid prototype Max, begin work on Max 2

Max weighs about 106 pounds, stands roughly 1.5 meters tall and runs on Nvidia's Jetson Thor chip, according to The Information.

Meta developed a humanoid robot prototype called Max with Chinese robotics company Fourier over about three months, and the two companies have begun work on a second-generation machine, Max 2, according to The Information.

Max weighs roughly 106 pounds and stands about 1.5 meters tall. The prototype is based on Nvidia's Jetson Thor chip and carries two speakers in its chest. It can grasp small bottles and toys with five-fingered hands, recognize voices from 5 meters away and read gestures from 3 meters away.

Work on Max 2 began in September. The second-generation robot is set to have a redesigned torso and hands, a projector for displaying video and sensors for climbing stairs.

A Meta spokesperson said the company has no plans to sell the robot and that the Fourier collaboration is for internal research. Meta showed Max to some employees at an internal robotics event in late August.

Robotics push inside Meta

Meta set up its robotics organization, Meta Robotics Studio, in early 2025. The company has also released Muse, an AI agent for personal users, and CTO Andrew Bosworth described the humanoid internally as Muse gaining a physical body. Ricchen Miller, vice president of Meta robotics products, stayed at Fourier's Shanghai factory for nearly two months to take part in prototype development.
