Runware targets 30MW per day of modular AI data centers by 2028
Runware plans to start mass production of its Sonic Pod modules at the end of 2027, with each 20-foot unit holding about 1,200 GPUs.
Runware said it aims to produce 30MW of modular AI data center capacity per day by 2028 and to begin mass production at the end of 2027, according to digitaltoday.co.kr. The company assembles its Sonic Pod units in a factory and ships them to sites where power and telecom infrastructure are already in place, targeting operation within 48 hours of delivery.
Each Sonic Pod module is 20 feet long and houses about 1,200 GPUs, providing 1MW of computing capacity. The units use closed-loop liquid cooling that does not require a continuous external water connection. Runware currently assembles the modules in Romania and plans a second factory in early 2027.
Producing one module currently takes about three weeks. Runware says that time can be cut to one day once assembly lines are fully built. The company also says it has secured $1 billion in committed interest, corresponding to more than 20MW of data center capacity.
Rivals and market pressure
On October 21, Nvidia unveiled DSX POD, a reference design for next-generation Vera Rubin systems. Crusoe, which has operated modular facilities since 2020, runs a roughly 352,000-square-foot factory in Colorado and supplies AI infrastructure through its Spark platform connected to Crusoe Cloud.
Demand for such capacity is rising against grid constraints. Grand View Research forecasts the global modular data center market to grow from about $29 billion in 2024 to $75.8 billion in 2030, while JLL estimates global data center capacity could reach 200GW by 2030 and says grid connection waiting times in major markets exceed four years. The IEA expects data center electricity consumption to reach 950 TWh by 2030. In August, Texas temporarily halted grid approvals for projects under review and in September suspended environmental permitting.
