Samsung, LG Display Push Tandem OLED Into Cars and Humanoids
LG Display showed a 1,200-nit third-generation automotive tandem OLED at SID 2026, while Samsung Display has shipped a 24.6-inch tandem panel for the Genesis GV90 since August.
Samsung Display and LG Display are both positioning themselves to lead the tandem OLED market for vehicles and humanoid robots, presenting their latest panels at recent industry events, according to digitaltoday.co.kr.
LG Display unveiled a third-generation tandem OLED for automotive use at SID Display Week 2026 in the US in May. The panel is rated at 1,200 nits and can operate for more than 15,000 hours at room temperature without screen degradation, the company said. LG Display plans to start automotive mass production within the year and later extend the technology to IT products.
Samsung Display, for its part, has been shipping a 24.6-inch OLED with a tandem structure for the Genesis GV90 since August. At K-Display 2026 in July, the company showed a “Big Hole” display featuring an 80mm hole for a gear dial and air vent.
Robots in the frame
Both companies also used their recent appearances to show OLED technology for humanoid robots. LG Display publicly displayed a P-OLED for humanoid robots built on automotive tandem OLED technology for the first time at SID, while Samsung Display unveiled an OLED for humanoids that reacts to the viewer’s gaze at K-Display 2026.
LG Display commercialized tandem OLED for the first time in the world in 2019 and mass-produced its second-generation version in 2023. On their third-quarter earnings calls, Samsung Display said it aims for sales growth centered on high-value products next year, and LG Display said the mid- to long-term growth potential of the automotive display market remains high.
