Volvo Developing Level 2++ Urban Driving Assistance System

Volvo is partnering with Nvidia to create a new urban driving assistance system, targeting commercialization before 2030 across its vehicle lineup.

Volvo announced on October 15, 2026, that it is expanding its partnership with Nvidia to develop a Level 2++ driving assistance system designed for urban environments. This new technology aims to handle complex driving scenarios, including traffic lights, stop signs, and unprotected left turns.

According to digitaltoday.co.kr, the system will utilize Nvidia's Hyperion platform alongside Alpamayo software. The configuration relies on high-performance automotive computers and sensors, though it will not include lidar sensors in its initial setup. Volvo noted that it may incorporate lidar at a later stage.

The automaker plans to integrate its proprietary driver state monitoring technology with vehicle-to-vehicle hazard information sharing. Volvo intends to commercialize this system before 2030, with plans to roll it out across its entire range, from entry-level to premium models. The company has not yet disclosed a specific launch date or the first vehicle model to feature the system.

In the past, Volvo faced challenges securing regulatory approval in the United States, which led to the suspension of its Level 3 autonomous driving system, Ride Pilot.
