WIRED Links 149 Ikea Kallsup Speakers Into One Chain
A defective unit left 149 of the 150 speakers sent from Sweden in the test, which reached 447 watts of rated output.
WIRED linked 149 Ikea Kallsup Bluetooth speakers into a single chain, the largest setup the $10 speakers have been put through. According to WIRED, the test began with 150 units sent from Sweden, but one arrived defective and would not play, leaving 149 for the chain.
The speakers were paired to an iPhone 16 Pro. Each additional Kallsup was added by powering it on and holding the Play button until a chime signalled multi-speaker mode. Linking the full set took about 30 minutes, and WIRED checked the volume at 100 units before continuing to 149.
The chain kept accepting speakers without failing up to 149 units. An Ikea spokesperson had said nobody had tried the full chain before, WIRED reported.
What 149 speakers sound like
At maximum volume the combined setup was described as extremely loud, closer to a fire alarm than a hi-fi system. Each Kallsup carries a 1.8-inch full-range driver powered by a 3-watt amplifier with Bluetooth 5.3 support.
Together, the 149 drivers have a combined surface area roughly equal to one 22-inch driver and a combined rated output of 447 watts.
Ikea launched the $10 Kallsup in April and said at the time that up to 100 of them could be chained together.
