TIFFCOM Session Puts 2025 Anime Market at ¥4.45 Trillion

Preliminary figures presented ahead of the Anime Industry Report 2026 show overseas spending rising 17.2% to ¥2.54 trillion.

A session at TIFFCOM on Friday, October 30, 2026 examined Japanese animation's global expansion from three perspectives, with industry figures presenting preliminary 2025 data ahead of the Anime Industry Report 2026. The broader anime market was put at ¥4.45 trillion ($28.22 billion), up 15.8% from 2024.

Overseas spending was estimated at ¥2.54 trillion ($16.13 billion), up 17.2%, while the Japanese market grew 14.1% to ¥1.91 trillion ($12.09 billion). The overseas share of the broader market rose to 57.1%, compared with 56.5% in 2024.

Masahiro Hasegawa, editor-in-chief of the Anime Industry Report, cautioned that international revenues do not necessarily flow directly to animation companies because money goes through production committees.

The session included presentations by Hitomi Hiratsuka, director of international sales and productions at Nippon Animation, and Yoko Ueda, director of corporate administration and IP and communications at Production I.G, on their companies' international strategies. Nippon Animation's World Masterpiece Theater was cited as an example of an international outlook, and Demon Slayer as an example of box office presence abroad.

According to cartoonbrew.com, anime production companies' revenue was estimated at ¥505.5 billion ($3.21 billion) in 2025, up 8.4%, with overseas revenue at 27.9% of the total, compared with 25.5% a year earlier. Japan's content industry is targeting ¥20 trillion ($126.87 billion) in overseas sales by 2033, with anime expected to contribute ¥6 trillion ($38.06 billion).
