BRUTAL game framework goes source-available

Ahwoo and RocketWerkz published the C# framework's source code under a custom licence with attribution and no royalties.

Ahwoo and RocketWerkz released the source code of the BRUTAL C# framework as source-available software on October 16, 2026. The framework is published under a custom licence that requires attribution.

BRUTAL is free to use and carries no royalties, but it is not open source. GamingOnLinux reported the release.

The framework currently powers six game projects across three studios. Among them is RocketWerkz's Kitten Space Agency, and the studio is also using BRUTAL for Art of the Rail and Torpedia, both in development.

Felipe Falanghe, creator of Kerbal Space Program, is using BRUTAL for his next game. Dean Hall is founder and CEO of both Ahwoo and RocketWerkz, while Rian Drake is Head of Engineering of BRUTAL at Ahwoo.

Engine changes elsewhere

In separate context, RimWorld recently moved off Unity to its own engine, Waylith. Kitten Space Agency won the Most Innovative Hi-Tech Creative Technology Solution at the 2026 NZ Hi-Tech Awards.
