Critical Role Episode 41 Reveals the Candescent Creed's Luxes Are Warlocks

Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan explained in "True Nature" that the luxes' spell slots come from demons and their Cleric spells from angel's blood tattoos.

Critical Role's Campaign 4 episode 41, titled "True Nature", revealed that the luxes of the Candescent Creed are Warlocks whose magic is built on demonic contracts and tattoos, according to Polygon.

In the episode, the party returns to Tyranny and Wicander Halovar in the demonic plane known as The Pit. There, Yanessa Halovar is revealed to be a Warlock whose patron is Ksha'aravi. Yanessa controls Ksha'aravi after he revealed his true name during a game she played when she was younger.

The luxes of the Candescent Creed are Warlocks whose spell slots come from the demons Ksha'aravi and Zgroog, the latter described as a demonic golden tick. The luxes also gain Cleric spells such as healing and Ceremony through filament tattoos made from angel's blood.

Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan explained these rules to his players during the episode, setting out how Warlock magic works within the campaign.

Long-standing homebrew

Critical Role's cast and crew have long been open to bending or changing Dungeons & Dragons rules to fit their story. Matthew Mercer created classes such as the Blood Hunter and added subclasses for his players, and Mulligan, the current Dungeon Master, has homebrewed rules altering death, combat and magic.

The reveal follows a hint in Campaign 4, Episode 33, "Off-Balance", when Yanessa cast Eldritch Blast on Halandil Fang's mug and flew off. Magic has been severely restricted in the world of Aramán since the destruction of the gods.
