eXoSpace Combat Engineer Dev Plans Official Japanese Localization

The solo developer behind the spacecraft-building shooter says an official Japanese release will come after the in-game text is stabilized.

Fantastimaker's spacecraft-building shooter eXoSpace Combat Engineer will receive an official localization that includes Japanese, the game's developer said in an interview with gamespark.jp, adding that work will begin only after the in-game text is stabilized.

The developer, a Dutch solo indie known as Bas, said most of the game's text already supports Japanese fonts and translated text data, but some part descriptions are not fully covered. A Japanese localization mod is currently available on Steam Workshop.

eXoSpace Combat Engineer launched on PC and Linux on September 22 at 1,700 yen. The game offers more than 600 ship designs and over 200 parts, with bullet-hell bosses appearing at the end of missions. At the time of the interview it held a Very Positive rating of 87% on Steam.

Bas said he spent decades building spacecraft-design games that never moved past the prototype stage, and that the outer game loop was rebuilt several times, from a single-screen roguelite through a strategy and mission-based roguelite to the current mission-based progression system. YouTuber Splattercat posted a gameplay video after release.

Future updates and streaming

The developer plans to add new factions, bosses and ship parts, and to improve the outer game loop. The game includes a Streamer Mode designed to avoid YouTube copyright claims, and streaming is permitted.
