Korea's Global Frontier fund targets AA games, not AAA
The ministry will back two titles with 60 billion won each over two years, and applicants must fund at least half of the budget themselves.
South Korea's Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has detailed its Global Frontier Game Production Support program, confirming it is aimed at AA games with production budgets of 10 to 40 billion won rather than AAA titles, according to gamemeca.com.
Under the scheme, two games will be supported over two years with 60 billion won each, with the goal of entering the global market. Applicant companies must cover at least 50 percent of the government funding themselves, and the program is looking for new titles that can be released within two years. No platform restrictions apply.
Small and medium-sized game companies may apply in a consortium with large companies, provided the smaller firm acts as the lead organization and the large company participates. Games that have previously received production support are barred from applying, with the exception of indie planning-stage support recipients. Early access and global soft launches may be counted as release performance, subject to review.
Shift from earlier proposals
In September 2026, the ministry's 2027 budget proposal introduced the Global Frontier Game Production Support and described it at the time as a way to foster blockbuster titles. Previously, ministry production support ran around 10 million won for indie games and up to 1 billion won over three years for commercialization support.
The program is overseen by the ministry's Game Content Industry Division. AAA titles such as Crimson Desert were cited as examples of games better suited to development by the private sector.
