Aonuma: Some Ocarina of Time Remake Devs Never Played the Original

Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma told Japan Today that younger team members brought fresh ideas to the Nintendo remake, due November 5, 2026.

Some members of the development team behind The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake have never played the original Nintendo 64 game, Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma said in an interview with Japan Today.

Aonuma said the younger developers' fresh ideas helped shape how the remake adapts the game and makes it fun with the controls in hand. He did not name the team members involved.

The remake adds new features, updated controls, dungeon changes and side quests, along with a dedicated jump button. Players will also be able to hide the user interface.

Aonuma said he is nervous about the remake's release because of the original game's importance to the franchise. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake is scheduled to launch on November 5, 2026, and carries an ESRB rating of Everyone 10+.

Built on a 1998 landmark

The original Ocarina of Time was released in 1998 and remains one of the highest-rated video games of all time. Aonuma worked on it alongside Shigeru Miyamoto and later directed Majora's Mask.
