Sony launches QSSR AI upscaling for PS5, patches two games
Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution, an AI upscaling library for PS5 built from its AMD collaboration, and added it to Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei today.
Sony has announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a new AI upscaling library for the PlayStation 5. The company detailed the technology on the PlayStation Blog.
QSSR grew out of Project Amethyst, an AI graphics collaboration between Sony and AMD. According to Sony, the library uses a streamlined neural network architecture alongside a hand-tuned implementation aimed at PS5 performance.
Two first-party titles are the first to use it. Marvel's Wolverine, from Insomniac Games, and Ghost of Yōtei, from Sucker Punch Productions, are both being patched today to add QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5.
Sony says QSSR will be offered broadly to all PlayStation developers, opening the door for more titles to adopt the upscaler in the future.
Why PS5 owners asked for this
Since PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) launched on PS5 Pro, players and developers have asked whether similar image-quality improvements could reach the standard PS5. Until now, PSSR's computational demands made bringing that experience to PS5 impossible.
