Custom forest engine hits 130 FPS at 1440p on RTX 3080
Developer Toni Macaroni's handwritten engine uses voxel-based global illumination and virtual geometry instead of hardware ray tracing, per wccftech.com.
Developer Toni Macaroni has shown a forest environment running on a largely handwritten custom engine, averaging about 130 FPS at 1440p on an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080, according to wccftech.com.
Frame rates in the demo ranged from up to 200 FPS in aerial views to around 80 FPS in dense forest areas.
The engine relies on clustered levels of detail and Nanite-like virtual geometry, and represents distant vegetation as voxels instead of using traditional impostors. Its lighting combines screen-space techniques with voxel-based global illumination and does not use hardware ray tracing.
No public repository or downloadable build of the engine was found.
Earlier work
In an earlier X post, Macaroni said the engine had been in development for about seven months and was aimed at huge environments with high-polygon vegetation; one example has around 1 million instances and 4 million triangles. In August 2025, 80 Level covered another Godot-made forest environment by the developer that reportedly reached around 170 FPS uncapped on an RTX 3080.
