Rome II CPU mod claims 20% FPS gain, 33% better lows
Modder JGdaCaesar's fix for Total War: Rome II cuts texture streaming CPU load by roughly 12 to 17 times, according to benchmarks.
Modder JGdaCaesar has released a community CPU performance fix for Total War: Rome II, with benchmarks claiming up to 20% higher average frame rates and 33% better 0.1% lows, according to wccftech.com.
The published figures show campaign average FPS rising from 100.5 to 120.5, a 20% gain, while battle average FPS climbs from 118.4 to 140.4, about 19% higher. Battle 1% lows improved from 71.8 to 92.5, a 29% increase, and battle 0.1% lows rose from 57.9 to 77.0.
Testing was carried out on a Ryzen 9 9950X3D paired with a GeForce RTX 5090 at 4K with V-Sync off, measured with CapFrameX. According to the modder, the fix reduces texture streaming CPU workload by roughly 12 to 17 times, replaces about 1,200 x87 floating-point conversions with modern instructions, and reworks two render-list sorting routines to run about 11 times faster.
The mod is available on the Steam Workshop, with source code published on GitHub. Installation requires subscribing and running an included install.bat that copies a dinput8.dll into the game directory. It needs an SSE4.1-capable CPU and conflicts with other mods that use dinput8.dll.
JGdaCaesar used Anthropic's Claude AI for reverse engineering and coding assistance during development. The modder previously made a Total War: Attila CPU Performance Fix that addressed a multithreading bottleneck.
