Epic Games to remove Blueprints in Unreal Engine 6, due 2027

At Unreal Fest Tokyo, Epic confirmed Unreal Engine 6 arrives in 2027 with AI-assisted migration away from Blueprints, a workflow it is retiring.

Epic Games used Unreal Fest Tokyo to outline Unreal Engine 6, the next version of its game engine, which is slated to launch in 2027. The studio confirmed that the Blueprints scripting workflow will be removed from the engine, according to Famitsu.

To soften the transition, Epic promised AI-assisted migration away from Blueprints and other long-standing systems. CEO Tim Sweeney argued the change will pay off in productivity: he said output could improve by up to four times with AI-driven workflows, per Famitsu's coverage of the event.

Sweeney also framed AI adoption as unavoidable. He said the shift is unlikely to be reversed and that a competitive gap will widen between studios that adopt AI tools and those that do not, comments reported by Denfaminico Gamer from his pre-keynote remarks.

Epic intends to maximize AI-driven acceleration of workflows across Unreal Engine, he added.

Long-standing tools under review

Blueprints have been part of Unreal Engine for multiple decades. Developers have previously questioned Epic's plans to replace long-running workflows with AI assistants. In recent years, Japanese studios including Square Enix and Atlus have moved from internal engines to Unreal.
