WoW: Forever to get major updates about three times a year

Blizzard says the classic-era MMO's patch cadence will be "a little more laid back" than modern World of Warcraft, with raids driving the schedule.

Blizzard plans to release major content updates for World of Warcraft: Forever roughly three times a year, or about once every 17 weeks, principal game designer Kris Zierhut said in an interview with IGN.

Zierhut described the cadence as "a little more laid back" than the modern game. Major updates will be timed around new raid tiers.

Not all of each update will arrive at once. Blizzard intends part of every patch to unlock one to three months after the update itself goes live.

The updates will also include content for characters below max level, not only raid content.

Eight-week experiment felt too fast

While running the limited-time Season of Discovery mode, many developers on Forever experimented with releasing new content every eight weeks, which Zierhut said felt "way, way, way too fast."
