Imax CEO Chides Regal and Cinemark Over Cliff Booth Snub

Rich Gelfond said the chains could screen The Hunger Games on other screens while giving Cliff Booth their Imax venues.

Imax CEO Rich Gelfond said he does not understand why some theater circuits will not show The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth during its two-week Imax run, which begins over Thanksgiving weekend, according to deadline.com.

The film starts a 27-day exclusive theatrical window on Nov. 29 on Imax and at independent theaters. AMC Theatres will screen it; Regal and Cinemark will not, citing the shortened theatrical window, and will instead run The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping on their Imax screens.

Gelfond argued the two circuits could accommodate both titles. He said exhibitors could play The Hunger Games on many screens and Cliff Booth on their Imax screens. He added that he has seen an extended clip of the film.

The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth is Quentin Tarantino's follow-up to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping opens the weekend before Cliff Booth's Nov. 29 release.

Netflix had earlier been set to release Greta Gerwig's Narnia: The Magician's Nephew in the Thanksgiving weekend Imax frame before the film moved to February.
