John Mulaney Talks Get Smart Role at Madden Premiere

The actor, in talks to lead Warner Bros.' Get Smart reimagining, says he likes playing super-confident characters who aren't always informed.

John Mulaney discussed his in-the-works Get Smart reboot while promoting Madden, saying his favorite kind of character to play is a super-confident person who is not always informed, according to hollywoodreporter.com.

Mulaney is in talks to lead the Get Smart reimagining, which Warner Bros. is developing with Seth Grahame-Smith writing the screenplay. Charles Roven and Andrew Lazar are producing.

The project remains in early development. In October 2025, it was reported that Mulaney was in talks for the lead role.

Get Smart began as a 1960s comedy series created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry, with Don Adams as the bumbling spy Maxwell Smart. Steve Carell led a 2008 film adaptation alongside Anne Hathaway and Dwayne Johnson; that movie collected $230 million globally, and a sequel was later scrapped.

Mulaney co-stars in Madden as Electronic Arts founder Trip Hawkins. The David O. Russell film, which features Nicolas Cage as John Madden and Christian Bale as Raiders owner Al Davis, opens in limited theaters and begins streaming on Prime Video on Nov. 18.
